Saltation | 跃移. 突变  – "a new concept of evolution by saltations or sudden transitions..."

The term saltation was first used by Gilbert (1914) and originated from the Latin word "saltare" which means to leap or dance. Our contemporary bodies are more than ever inscribed by culture, constrained by the geopolitical environment and moulded by social media patterns. Our bodies are constantly under intense scrutiny in order to better accommodate the mass culture while measuring oneself against the all mighty consumerism. Undoubtedly, the body ,senses, and when it does, we (our energies, behaviours, desires) suffer. We observe how the dancing body mirrors, deliberately or not, the societal and political challenges of our world. With our contributors, we wonder what kind of mirror is the body of a dancer today, now. To what extent are we given the space to be permeated by socio-political events? To what extent can it encourage political analysis and societal thought? How vigorous is the message that it chooses to convey?

Through this production, we strive to continually break new grounds, while honouring both traditional and contemporary developments in dance. "Saltation" seeks to materialise through experimental approach while progressing with a creative process. At the same time, take this opportunity to examine the possibility in collaborating and performing together with different dance 'bodies' and artist to make this production a success.

Under the guidance of our in house Creative Director, Mr Benedict Soh, “Saltation” will be presented by three (3) choreographers:

  1. Mr Benedict Soh, Creative Director of Dance Horizon Troupe (Singapore), MFA First Class Honours in Dance Choreography with University of Melbourne, Australia,

  2. Mr Goh Cheeseng, resident choreographer and dancer of Dance Horizon Troupe (Singapore), a fresh graduate with a Diploma in Dance with the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London.

  3. Mr Peter Gn, Guest Choreographer, Roehampton University (London) with a Masters (Merit) in Dance Studies and Masters in Choreography with Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London

With choreographers trained from various backgrounds, this contemporary dance production sets to inject the dance scene with an intriguing mix of dance styles and elements, together with reative choreography techniques and approach, we hope to bring to the audience a unique watching experience with the amalgamation of reality and vision, convention, equanimity and excitement.

My dreams they come

Your voice

Finds me again

Emptiness collapses as

Your dance endlessly before me

Standing firm yet falling fast

I stab at the nothingness

The dark closes in like a very bad animal

If trees could talk to us I wonder what they would say ..

Of events, which they have witnessed. Or of man's destructive ways ..

I'm certain that they have tried with endless sighs and pleas ..

If only we would listen to the voices of the trees ..

We cut them and we cleat them to make room for what is new ..

A barren and lifeless landscape. An Earth without a view ..

The oaks and the cherries.. The cedars and the pines ..

The Redwoods and Sequoias. All giants at one time ..

If trees could speak to us. I'm sure of what they would say ..

In all our infinite progress. Mankind has lost his way ..

Next time you're in the forest. Listen intently to the breeze ..

Listen ever closely to the voices of the trees!
